Conti Costanti is one of the three “founding fathers” of Brunello di Montalcino and, with Barbi, the only one still owned by the same family. The barely 10ha vineyard, entirely biodynamic, is located just outside the town on the southern slope. Without much fuss, some of Montalcino’s finest wines are made here year after year. After manual harvest, the grapes are completely de-risked and fermented in steel cuves. The Brunello matures in large 30hl and 5hl barrels for 3 years. The results are particularly great Brunello’s in a complex, structured style , with slightly more roundness that makes them a little more approachable than those from Biondi-Santi. Costanti’s Brunello’s have always been among the best in the region, and especially in the last decade Andrea and his team have been making truly great wines!

RP:“The Conti Costanti 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is vinous and ripe with lots of energy that comes from plummy black fruit and dried blackberry. The wine is front-loaded with those varietal tones, but the mouthfeel reveals a more delicate and softer approach than you might expect given the potency of that first nose. The wine achieves harmony, and offers a nice, long finish. The label states that fruit comes from the Colle al Matrichese, but I am not sure if that is an official estate vineyard designation. Either way, this is a seriouscellar-worthy Brunello to sip and consider with a platter of finecheeses.95/100

Michaela Morris (Decanter):
Check out the 2015 Brunello vintage report…my top rated wine was Conti Costanti”.

Jancis Robinson: “Tasted blind. Lustrous mid ruby. Contained richness on the nose and gorgeous succulent notes of sour cherry and marasca cherry on the palate. Just a touch of oak and chewy tannins flexing their muscle on the finish. True precision but definitely ‘sexy’ and sheer pleasure. Can be approached now but with lots of potential to age further. 17,5/20 (ex aequo hoogste score!)

Antonio Galloni (Vinous): Andrea Costanti is at the very top of his game. The wines have never been better at a property that remains a reference point for Montalcino…. Andrea Costanti’s straight Brunello remains one of the single best and most consistent wines in Montalcino. 93/100

RP: “The Conti Costanti 2016 Brunello di Montalcino shows warm fruit layering with cherry, wild raspberry and plum. You might also notice some touches of sweetness with candied orange skin and lavender honey. At the back of it all, you get tilled earth and a touch of black olive. This wine reveals good complexity to the bouquet and follows up with a streamlined, mid-weight mouthfeel. I found this vintage to be shorter compared to the 2015 edition tasted earlier in the year.94/100

Eric Guido (Vinous): There’s a sensuality to Costanti’s 2016 Brunello di Montalcino. It’s something about the way it draws you in and warms the soul. Its bouquet straddles both the light and dark sides of Sangiovese, rising up with alluring flowery perfumes, cedar dust and crushed cherry, yet then swaying toward rich brown spices and clove. The textures are velvety-smooth and elegant, ushering in a dense core of fleshy red berry fruits, which leave a coating of crystalline minerals and fine tannins in their wake. Though structured and aching for a stay in the cellar, you can’t help but pour another glass of this simply spellbinding Brunello. While in need of three to five years in the cellar for optimal enjoyment, the 2016 is absolutely worth checking in on today.” 96/100
