De wijn is gemaakt van puur Cinsault, afkomstig van wijnstokken die eveneens dateren uit de jaren 50. Cinsault werd lange tijd gebruikt voor roséwijnen of om rode wijnen zachter te maken. Als monocépage levert het echter wijnen van grote verfijning op. Net als bij de vorige druivensoort heeft ook deze druif te maken gehad met een slechte reputatie. De naam van de wijn lag daarom voor de hand: “L’Oeil du Diable” klinkt niet alleen intrigerend, maar doet ook denken aan “l’oeillade”, een variëteit van Cinsault. Meer was er niet nodig voor de naamgeving.

This wine is made from pure Cinsault, with vines dating back to the 1950s. Cinsault was long used for rosé wines or to soften red wines, but as a single-varietal, it produces wines of remarkable finesse. Like the previous grape variety, Cinsault has also faced its share of criticism. The name of the wine was therefore an obvious choice: “L’Oeil du Diable” (The Devil’s Eye) not only sounds intriguing but also evokes “l’oeillade,” a variety of Cinsault. That was all it took for the naming.

In 2013, three friends with a deep knowledge and passion for wine embarked on a unique journey by establishing their own winery dedicated to natural wines. Together, they meticulously choose vineyards and grapes that meet the highest standards of excellence, all while adhering to a single guiding philosophy: crafting wines that are truly alive.
Right from the outset, Poivre d’Âne carried a profound social and political message. They made a resolute choice to eliminate chemicals from their winemaking processes. Instead, they rely on natural yeasts derived from the grapes themselves and use minimal levels of sulfites. This commitment to purity and sustainability is what defines the essence of Poivre d’Âne and its nonconformist winemakers.
