Saint Cosme Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2019
Louis is already making stunning Châteauneuf in 2019! From 50% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault and 3% Clairette, sourced from lieu-dits Valori and Christia, sandy soils next to and similar to Rayas, and La Crau, the most reputed terroir with the famous “Galets roulés” and more clay in the soil. All fermented together in “vendange entière” and aged for 24 months in barrels of 2 and 4 years and then bottled without any filtering. Thanks to a longer hang time, this also does have the beautiful, powerful flavour of 2015, with perhaps just a little more depth and balance between power and freshness. 2016 really is a special year here, perhaps on the level of 2010! Drink this Châteauneuf ideally after 6-7 years of storage and discover a bouquet of violets, gingerbread, “garrigue”, truffle and tapenade. It is a very full-bodied wine, yet with the necessary freshness and even a slightly mineral finish. Top wine!
