In early 2014, Comtesse Alexandra de Vazeilles purchased Château des Bachelards in Fleurie, one of the oldest and most beautiful estates in Beaujolais. She immediately invested in top-notch equipment for the vineyard and cellar and works with experts, including Stéphane Derenoncourt for vinification. The results were evident from the first year: her wines scored highly, and with the 2015 and 2016 vintages, her estate is already considered among the top in the region by the international press. The terroir of this Moulin-à-Vent is a mix of old black granite and slate rocks with a clay and limestone layer. After manual harvesting and fermentation in concrete vats, the wine ages for 20 months in oak barrels. The result is a full, powerful wine with aging potential of at least 20 years.

Château des Bachelards' Saint-Amour comes from plots halfway up the slope in the south of the appellation Saint-Amour. Unlike many wines from this AOP, the Saint-Amour from Château des Bachelards is a dense, deep, powerfully built wine and made for long storage, yet already deliciously young. The terroir is weathered pink granite with plots of clay into which the roots penetrate deeply. The vineyard is 40-60 years old, planted at 10,000 vines per hectare. After manual picking, the completely un-stemmed grapes ferment in concrete cuves for 26 days. This is followed by maturation of no less than 2 years in large wooden casks and 500-litre demi-muids. The result is a dark, deep-fruited wine with long, slightly mineral finish and super soft tannins.

Never did we taste a Saint Amour of such a stunning level! Fabulous bouquet, delicious, full-bodied, juicy flavour with the very finest tannins. This is definitely a great wine!
