Cantine Guastaferro Taurasi “Primum” Riserva 2007
Not many vineyards still have ungrafted grapes. However, the vineyard where this wine is harvested is more than 175 years old. Moreover, it is located in Piano d’Angelo, reputedly the most beautiful vineyard in Taurasi. This is a particularly rich wine, full-bodied and powerful, with a very varied bouquet in which you constantly discover new aromas. On top of that, it is also very charming and fine, a not obvious combination. Only 1500 bottles of this were produced. 2011 is the first Riserva since the memorable 2007.
Jancis Robinson:“Bottled December 2012. Deep, deep ruby. Lots of concentrated sweet fruit but with a clear new oak edge. Polished tannins and a long, big finish.”
Wine Enthusiast: “Aromas of mature black-skinned fruit, baking spice, new leather, a whiff of oak and a balsamic note unfold on this powerful, concentrated red, which the winery only makes in exceptional vintages. The smooth, full-bodied palate doles out ripe black cherry, raspberry jam, sweet baking spice and licorice alongside big, rounded tannins. The juicy fruit richness seamlessly supports the hefty abv of 15%.“
Ian d’Agatha: Best Italian full-bodied red wine of the year: As much as I love the three “B’s” of Italian wine (Barolo, Barbaresco and Brunello) my vote goes to the 2010 Guastaferro Taurasi Primum, a heady mix of ripe red fruit, tar and licorice aromas and flavors with some age on them.
