Domaine Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanée Les Hautes Maizières VV 2016
“The 2016 Vosne Romanee Hautes Maizieres, which comes from more clayey soils relative to Bruno’s other crus, has a very pretty bouquet with ample red fruit mixed with hints of fennel and wilted rose petal. There is a lovely, almost vanillary scent of Bakewell tart that emerges with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, spicy in the mouth with a finish that may not be long or deep, but is clearly very defined and surfeit with joie de vivre. This will drink very well over the next decade, possibly longer.” (RP)
“(from deeper soil featuring clay over calcaire, with a lot of fossilized sea urchins): Bright medium red. Tight on the nose; less about red fruits and more about menthol and garrigue. Rather spherical in the mouth owing to the clay influence but bone-dry and not yet filled in. This has dimension but today the masculine tannins cut off the fruit. Clavelier suggests that this rather serious wine is more for red meats, and the Combe Brûlée for white.” (Vinous)
Bruno Clavelier makes some of the very finest Bourgognes. His wines are extremely varietal and full of finesse, showing the nuance differences between the various terroirs in a quasi-inimitable way. The wines do require several years of ageing, but your patience will be particularly rewarded.
Les Hautes Maizières lies just below premier cru Les Suchots and has a more clay-loving soil, giving a more muscular, creamier wine.
