Domaine Michel Noëllat Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2021
In this particularly complex vineyard, both in terms of location, size, fragmentation and internal differences, Michel Noëllat owns 2 plots of half a hectare together. One plot is in lieu-dit “Quartier des Marei haut”, next to the plot of Domaine d’ Eugénie, the former Domaine Engel. The other plot is in lieu-dit “Quatorze Journeaux” in the lower, more clayey part. For years, the quality of the lower parts has been debated. The higher plot produces wine with a strong aromatic, delicious and dusty bouquet, but which lacks some body and structure. The wine from the lower, more clay-containing part, on the other hand, has a less ethereal bouquet but just that rich, structured bouquet that contributes to the reputation of this Grand Cru. Then again, the blend is always the greatest, velvety wine with certainly a very long life ahead of it.
Inside Burgundy: “The 2021 Michel Noëllat Clos Vougeot displays a deeper purple colour, offering a heady dark fruit on the nose. There is definitely significantly more punch here over and above the Echezeaux, without losing elegance. A fine long finish. Well made. Drink from 2028-2035.” 93-95/100
