Gagliole Colli della Toscana Centrale Pecchia 2016
Pecchia is Gagliole’s top wine. This wine is made from a super selection of the very best grapes from the Vigna Grande vineyard in Panzano. Located at 500 metres altitude with a clay-limestone soil on the vaunted Albarese. Vinification is “integral” ttz. “en barrique” , which greatly benefits the fusion of the wood. The softer, slower extraction allows the wine to remain on the skins for up to 45 days. It then goes for 18 months on gently over charcoal toasted barriques, about 70% new and then another six months in bottle before release. Totally different in character from the Gallule and with the “warmer” of Panzano, this is Gagliole’s top wine and immediately one of the greatest Sangiovese wines we know. Produced only in top years and even then in minuscule quantities, barely 1,000 bottles in 2016, this is an exclusive, expensive wine, proving once again that Chianti Classico can produce wines that are among the finest on the planet!
Vinous (Antonio Galloni): “The 2016 Pecchia is one of the best wines I have ever tasted from Gagliole, maybe the best. It possesses tremendous intensity in its aromatics and flavors, yet also remains incredibly refined. Black cherry, plum, leather, licorice and spice all build effortlessly. The 2016 spent 18 months in small French oak followed by a few months in stainless steel.” 97/100
